Soon enough, the thread of this familiar tale veers into magical realism with dreams and night terrors which merge into real life.and then into a treatise on motherhood, parenthood, native American reparations, and ultimately into environmental fiction. Her half-sister is a snarling Goth who actually wants help cleaning the piles of debris in her room, and later morphs into an Izod wearing preppy. Mother goes by Sweetie and chews shoelaces to avoid smoking. She learns that she is named after her mother Mary Potts. Her storytelling is full of humor and light, even as the topics grow more dire.Ĭedar starts the story by seeking her birth parents because she and Phil are pregnant and she'd like to learn about her baby's medical history.
Louise Erdrich's prose is beautifully wrought yet approachable.
