Liu’s ball lightning is not the ball lightning studied by meteorologists in the real world. Ball Lightning wasn’t available in English when the English edition of The Dark Forest was published. Liu, of course, decided not to put his original Tyler plan in the English edition because Tyler’s plan uses ball lightning, and to understand how that works, the reader needs the content from Liu’s earlier novel Ball Lightning. I have always thought that Wallfacer Frederick Tyler’s plan in the English edition of The Dark Forest is hastily made patchwork compared what is in the original edition of The Dark Forest.
This is a niche topic and is skippable when reading the trilogy, but if you are a huge nerd like me, you might get a kick out of this.
